We hosted the Monroe County Championships on Saturday October 4th. We won for the 5th straight year. We swam and dove incredibly, with each girl recording season best times or scores on the boards, and many notching career bests. Milan 592 Monroe 467 Bedford 429 Dundee 386 Erie-Ida 208 Monroe SMCC 155 The meet started with the dive event. Kaylin Brown took the win and freshman Sky Gallenger took 10th. The swim events started with the 200 Medley. The C relay swam to 11th, as Peyton bergstrom, Emma Brown, Delany Didyk and Hazel Gibbs all swam incredibly. The B relay of Brianna Pumfrey, Tori Kimberly, Sara Mitchell and Ginny Heikka swam fantastic to take 5th, and the A relay of Afton Presley, Mary Kate Wayne, Avery Hovatter and Kelsie Gillay took the win in an incredible time of 1:55.13. The 200 free was big for Milan, as Cristina Wilson dropped almost 10 seconds to claim 11th. Ashtyn Bergstrom dropped 8 to finish 6th. Evelyn Gill and Lila Mckenna pulled away from the field and battled each other down to final touch, with Gill taking the win, and McKenna finishing 0.1 behind in the race of the day. Both Gill and McKenna had incredible days overall. The 200 IM saw Sara Mitchell make the state cut and claim 1st, with Afton Presley in 2nd, and Emma Brown had a career best to finish 14th. In the 50 free, every girl for Milan swam great and recorded a best time on the season. Lyric Lowry, Zoie Devine, Peyton Bergstrom and Hazel Gibbs all swam great. Scoring for Milan was Heikka in 10th, Vandergrift in 8th, Kimberly in 5th and Gillay in 4th. Mary Kate Wayne cruised to the win in the 100 Fly with Hovatter in second, and Pumfrey in 5th. All had season or career best times, and allowed us to really start pulling away from the field in the team scores. In the 100 Free Lowry, Didyk and Gibbs all had career bests. Scoring for Milan was Cristina Wilson in 15th, Heikka in 14th, Ashtyn Bergstrom in 10th and Vandergrift in 8th. The 500 Free has always been a Milan event, and Saturday was no different. Gill had a career best to win, and McKenna cruised to 2nd. Bri Pumfrey had a season best to claim 6th. The 200 free relay was another win and State Cut for Milan. Gillay, Hovatter, Mckenna and Gill held off a tough Monroe group to win. Heikka, Kimberly, Ashtyn bergstrom and vandergrift swam fantastic and took 4th. Our C relay of Wilson, Gibbs, Didyk and Lowry swam best times to flex our depth. In the 100 Back, Emma Brown was 13th, Sara Mitchell was 5th and Presley had a career best to take 2nd. The 100 Breast was another win for Mary Kate Wayne as she moved to number 2 all time in Milan History in the event. Gillay had a tremendous swim to make the state cut and take 2nd, Kimberly was 4th in a season best, and Didyk and Devine both had career best times in the event. The meet finished with the 400 free relay and we finished in dramatic fashion. The C relay of Wislon, Brown, Pumfrey and Lowry all swam great. The A relay of Hovatter, mckenna, Gill and Wayne ran away from the field as all four girls swam phenomenal. The B relay of Vandergrift, Mitchell, Bergstrom and Presley battled and came back on the Bedford relay to take 2nd and finish the day and meet with a 1,2 finish for Milan. We won all but three events on the day, but what allows us to be successful in meets like this is our depth. We managed to score multiple girls in events. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication by ALL of our young ladies. Some of our athletes would have scored points, but they could not because 4 of their Milan teammates scored ahead of them. We are not allowed to score more than 4 in an event. This is what allows us to build for the future as well, as their time will come, and them competing day in and day out against each other in practice builds the program. We as a staff are very proud of these young ladies and the job they did on Saturday. We will get back down to work, as we only have a few more weeks until the Huron league Championships and about 6 weeks until the State Championships. Thanks for your support of our Big Reds.
