The Milan Girls Tennis team competed at the division 3 regional tournament yesterday hosted by Grosse Ile and finished 4th place out of 9 teams with a total of 12 points. Milan went into the tournament with 5 seeds at 1 singles and all four doubles flights and converted this into 8 points. Meghan Helfen also kicked in 1 point at 4 singles by beating Airport. Individual scores are listed below. The story of the day was at two singles where senior Kaily McDaniel who just learned to play tennis four months ago entered the regional unseeded at 2 singles, collected three points, and came within a set of winning the 2 singles flight. Kaily earned her first victory of the day in a rat-tail match when she defeated a tough unseeded Adrian opponent that spent most of her year playing 1 singles. Kaily won in a 3rd set breaker 6-7/ 6-3 / 10-8. Kaily then faced Chelsea, the 6th ranked team in the state, who was also the 1st seed at 2 singles. In a sport that rarely sees upsets of 1 seeded teams, Kaily claimed the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker and went on to take the second set 6-3. Ousting the 1st seed from the tournament in the quarter finals. She then played her semi-finals match versus the 4th seeded Riverview and after dropping the first set due to exhaustion, came back to win 3-6/ 6-1/ 6-4. After starting her first match of the day at 9 AM, she entered her fourth and final match against Tecumseh in the finals starting at 5:56 PM. Against Tecumseh, Kaily again went to a third set in the final match, but fell short 1-6/ 6-4/ 2-10. Finishing around 8 PM and after playing almost 10 hours of tennis through four matches, Kaily finished runner up at 2 singles for the regional tournament. It was the single greatest day of tennis that I have seen a Milan athlete have in my 18 years of coaching. Finishing six points from qualifying for states, this was our last competition of the season. Our final record is 7-6.
