Milan High School athletics is very proud of the rich history and tradition of our MHS cheerleading team. Given the current circumstances we thank everyone for their patience in how we proceed with cheer team activities. As you know, we usually hold tryouts in the spring. Obviously, that was not able to happen this year. The athletic department and coaches have analyzed every possible scenario to try and make things work, and we do plan to have a cheer season!
The state of Michigan, the MHSAA, and Milan Area Schools have given us strict criteria to follow for summer activities that we must abide by. Cheerleading is a HIGH RISK sport when it comes to the spread of COVID-19. The safety of our student-athletes is our top priority! Given the guidelines in place as of right now, we would have to keep cheerleaders 6+ feet apart from each other, wearing a mask to decrease the spread of respiratory droplets while they cheer, and have no stunting, touching, or other cheer related activities. At this time we do not feel it is safe, or necessary to hold a tryout process in June when we cannot do cheer related activities. We will evaluate where we are each week in the state’s reopening plan to try and have a process that will work.
As of NOW, we plan to start cheer in August with more updates coming in early August. We may start earlier if the restrictions are loosened and we’re allowed to do more cheer related activities. We will update the community when that time comes. Our cheer camp will not happen this year with so much uncertainty. This cheer season will look a little different than past seasons, but our ultimate goal is to make things work, and make it an enjoyable experience for our team. In the meantime, we encourage our cheerleaders to attend optional summer workouts, starting on Monday, June 15th. Thank you for your patience and understanding. GO BIG REDS!
